Nephi’s final written words. ⁣⁣

And what a fitting sandwich to some of his first words, found in 1 Nephi 3:7: “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded”. ⁣⁣

Obedience. ⁣It’s not the most popular word.⁣⁣

Why would we ever just do something because someone else told us to? Shouldn’t we be able to think for ourselves?⁣

These are all valid questions, and ones that I actually find very useful and important in many situations. ⁣⁣

But, still, Nephi is a stellar example of OBEDIENCE. ⁣⁣

After studying Nephi’s words and writings for the past 2 months, I know that Nephi had strong faith in the Lord. ⁣⁣

How did he show his love for the Lord? By being obedient through his ACTIONS. ⁣⁣

He went back to get the plates. He made a new bow. He built a ship. He separated his people from Laman and Lemuel’s posterity. ⁣⁣

He DID the things he was told to do by the Lord.⁣⁣

So how do we gain a testimony of the little elements of the gospel? Tithing, modesty, ministering, fulfilling church service callings…⁣⁣

We DO them. We obey what the Lord instructs us to do. ⁣⁣

“Why is ministering important? No one has ever really ministered to me and I’ve been fine. I also just don’t really click with the people I’m assigned to.”⁣⁣

We can’t learn the importance of ministering until we obey. Until we go and do. ⁣⁣

That is showing true faith. Not reasoning it out in our minds and then justifying coming up a little bit short.⁣⁣

We hear the command from the Lord, and we obey.⁣⁣

And when we keep the Spirit with us always, it is NEVER “blind obedience”. Although we may not see the purpose for what we do, we can receive a small confirmation that we WILL get there eventually.⁣⁣

I have had this experience a few, very tender times. I do not understand a principle or prompting, but when I muster up enough faith to do a little bit of action, the Spirit comes pouring in to let me know I’m heading in the right direction. ⁣⁣

Our loving Heavenly Father knows how we can bring the most happiness into our lives. ⁣⁣

And so when He commands or prompts or assigns – I will follow Nephi’s lifelong example, and quickly and simply OBEY.

Happy Studying!

For this post, I really wanted to share a personal experience of a time when words in the scriptures told me what to do in a very specific and dramatic way.

I looked back on the scriptures that I knew had told me what school to go to, what job to take, where to move, etc.

And none of them really made sense anymore.

What?! Where was my big powerful story that I could share?

I KNOW that the words of Christ found in the scriptures and through the words of his prophets can tell me everything. Literally everything.

But how is this possible?

There aren’t any stories in the scriptures about deciding to be a stay-at-home mom. There aren’t any stories about deciding where to move with your family when you have many great options. There aren’t any stories about combating loneliness and laziness in the way that I encounter them.

So where am I getting these very real answers to these very real questions in my life?

“The power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.” 2 Nephi 33:1

Nephi didn’t know what business decisions I would need to make when he was writing. But Heavenly Father, my Savior, and the Holy Ghost do.

And the Spirit’s purpose is to bring Their personalized message straight to me.

I just have to hold up my end:

-I have to read the scriptures. With real intent. As consistently as possible.

-I need to do things to invite the Spirit. Be as worthy as I can. Listen for Him.

And when I do these things, a powerful communication channel is opened.

It doesn’t mean that I get the answer that I think I want straight away.

Many times, I read scriptures and get the answers: Not yet. You need more time. Just wait.

Other times, I get small promptings: Communicate with someone. Go to the temple. Follow this prophet’s example from a completely different situation.

And then other times, the heavens are opened.

The scriptures are not confined by their words.

When we read them WITH the spirit, there is no stopping the heavenly communication that can happen.

Happy Studying!

Three seemingly unrelated things that my daughter did in the past week:

She started gripping her crayon in a different way.

She picked up a play purse and told me she was, “Ready to go to the temple!”

She picked up a rectangular block and told me that she was texting.

What do they all have in common?

My daughter was copying something she had just seen me do.

I know she is always learning from me, but honestly within the past week, she has clearly become a lot more intentional about copying very little things that I do.

The Savior invites us to “Come, Follow Me”.

What does that phrase really mean?

I use that phrase at least daily now to refer to the church curriculum.

But has the repetition made me forget its significance?

What do I see the Savior doing?

In the scriptures. Through his prophets. Through the Spirit.

I have that desire to do as he does. To follow him.

Because he already has it all figured out.

He has the perfect perspective. The perfect response to trials. The perfect attitude toward others.

So I can always look to him and make immediate adjustments, just like my daughter who decided to try holding a crayon from the side instead of gripping it at the top because she saw me coloring that way.

We have to “observe” our Savior, and then follow him.

He knows the way better than we do, because he is the way. We just have to take his invitation to come, and follow, and do as he does.

Happy Studying!

Can we get weirdly specific about a temptation I think a lot of us face, but don’t talk about that much?

The temptation to NOT pray.

Not just forgetting to pray, although I think that can often be a side effect of the issue, but choosing to NOT pray.

In fact, Nephi even specifically calls out this strategy of the adversary in 2 Nephi 32:8:

“…the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.”

Why would we not pray?

I’m too angry to pray.

I don’t have anything new to say.

I feel like I just prayed.

I’m too overwhelmed/tired to actually say a meaningful prayer.

What’s the point? Nothing changes anyway.

I’m not feeling grateful right now.

It’s not that big of a deal.

He knows what’s going on in my mind, so I don’t need to say a formal prayer.

How do we root out this temptation that is so specifically called-out in the scriptures?

The good ol’ Bible Dictionary puts it perfectly.

Many of the difficulties or temptations we face for not praying come from forgetting about our true relationship with Heavenly Father: that He really is our Father, and we are His children.

God wants us to talk to Him when we are angry and upset.

He doesn’t care if we think we are too tired to have a meaningful conversation with Him.

He doesn’t get tired of hearing from us.

We don’t need to impress Him with outstanding new stories or phrases each time we talk with Him.

We know His will will always be done, so prayer is more about changing our hearts than changing His mind.

When we are reminded about our true relationship with the God of the Universe, prayer becomes instinctive and natural on our part.

And the temptation “to NOT pray” loses its power over us.

Happy Studying!

⁣But what if these five iconic steps outlined in 2 Nephi 31 are actually one giant circle? ⁣

I’m exercising faith in Christ every single day. Real faith moves me to act, and since my actions are not perfect, my true faith is not perfect yet. Faith? IN PROGRESS

⁣And since that faith is not perfect yet, I’ve got a lot of repenting to do. I’m getting better at enjoying this process, and seeing it as moving me forward. Repentance? IN PROGRESS

⁣Baptism? This is where that “linear” mindset comes from, because my baptism happened 20 years ago. But what’s our response for when people talk about that desire to be “baptized again” so they can be wiped clean again? THE SACRAMENT. I get to be “baptized” each week! I am making promises AGAIN to Heavenly Father, and He is telling me what blessings are available to me again. Weekly baptism? IN PROGRESS

⁣Gift of the Holy Ghost? Well sure, I received this gift initially 20 years ago, too. But am I always living in a manner that invites the Spirit to be with me constantly? Nope. So I get better and better at keeping the Spirit with me and recognizing his promptings. Constant companionship of Holy Ghost? IN PROGRESS

⁣This seems kind of obvious to me now. All of these elements of the Doctrine of Christ are what move me through “enduring to the end”. ⁣

But hopefully, I’m getting better each time I cycle through. ⁣

My faith is a little easier to find. I’m quicker to repent. I renew my covenants with greater intent. I’m even closer to the Spirit. ⁣

And I keep that giant circle rolling up higher and higher up the hill of endurance. ⁣

⁣After all, this is truly our purpose here. To use the Doctrine of Christ to become progressively more and more Christlike.

Happy Studying!

And then I got into choirs in High School. All of a sudden, we were adding nuanced dynamics and shaping phrases. My mind was blown! This was so much more exciting, and took a lot more practice and focus.

And then I got into the Women’s Chorus at BYU. Suddenly, we were focusing on where the sound was resonating in your mouth when you sing, different styles of vibrato and tone, and tuning notes that didn’t sound that “off” to me.

If you had taken me to a BYU Choir concert when I was 12 years old, I would have said that the choirs sounded amazing because they were all singing the right notes.

If you had taken me to a BYU Choir concert when I was 17 years old, I would have told you how amazing their dynamics, phrasing, and breaths were.

We only notice what we know to notice.

I like to think of some of the most Christlike people that I have known in my life.

When I was 12 years old, I would have told you they were Christlike because they were reading their scriptures and going to church.

When I was 17 years old, I would have told you they were Christlike because they were also kind and loving. They liked to serve other people.

And now, at 28, I notice that they also regularly attend the temple. They volunteer to serve beyond what would be expected. They invite the spirit into their lives. They act on promptings regularly, without analyzing their way out of it.

I only notice what I know to notice.

This makes me think of the Savior. We study his life and learn of him through the scriptures, church, Conference talks, spiritual promptings.

But we only learn what we are ready to learn.

What a perfectly individualized spiritual education plan.

Happy Studying!

Isn’t it kinda cool that we get to see all of Satan’s playbook exposed?

There’s no secret for who is winning this war. We KNOW that Satan will lose.

But we also know that he will take many souls down with him.

In 2 Nephi 28, we are also given some details about his top 3 strategies for dragging people down to hell and misery with him.

ANGER. “Stir them up to anger against that which is good.” (v20)

PACIFY. “All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth”. (v21)

FLATTER. “There is no hell… I am no devil, for there is none”. (v22)

Now, I can almost guarantee that it was easy to think of OTHER people who have clearly fallen for each of these tactics from the adversary.

But, my mantra for scripture study has always been and will always be: “Lord, is it I?”

First, do I have ANGER? Am I ever angry because someone else is doing good things and they are getting recognition that I am not? Am I frustrated when someone wants to do something the right way instead of the easier way, and it becomes inconvenient for me? Am I ever angry at a group of people who are just trying to do good?

Second, do I allow myself to be FLATTERED? Am I ever flattered to think that Satan wouldn’t spend any of his time on me? Do I allow the adversary to whisper in my ears without realizing it? Do I think that my sins aren’t that bad and that I would never actually receive punishment? Do I allow Satan to feed off of my pride?

And then there’s PACIFY. I think it is interesting that this is the only tactic of the adversary that mentions “Zion” – which makes me think this is the biggest stumbling block for people IN the church. Do I think that everything is just fine and dandy in my life right now, simply because I am a member of the church? Do I become too comfortable with my spiritual progression? Do I not even notice the little sins that have crept into my life because I have let my guard down? Do I think “enduring to the end” means coasting and not actively reaching out in love to people around me?

Whew. Those are a lot of questions to consider.

And, just like a battle, there are certain strategies that are going to work on certain people more than others.

So what tactic is Satan using to try and lead YOU “carefully down to hell”?

I honestly think that just recognizing his sneakiness and calling it out makes a big difference in casting him out of our lives.

And we can do this, because we have his playbook! We KNOW he will lose, but we KNOW what desperate attempts he will make on us on his way down.

“Get thee hence!”

Happy Studying!

It was the end of the semester at BYU, it was an easy Education class, and I really wanted to sleep.

I knew I would get 10% off for each day it was late, and I knew I could still easily get an A in the course no matter what grade I got in this small assignment.

So I went to bed.

I was doing some basic “risk assessment” – and I was accurate in my conclusion. I got a 90% on the assignment, and an easy solid A in the class at the end of the semester.

I willingly chose the “punishment” because I knew it wouldn’t affect my overall outcome.

Can we do risk assessment with our salvation?

Can we calculate what the negative consequences will be and then decide whether or not we want to follow the rules exactly or whether we want to fudge the lines a bit?

Well, we can. But Nephi gives us the Lord’s dire warning against this.

Because the purpose of this life is not to “pass” or to turn in the correct assignments.

We are here to fundamentally CHANGE who we are and become like God.

So when we use risk assessment and decide that we are fine with the eternal consequences for a little bit of sin and merriness, we mock our Savior’s atoning sacrifice.

We are willingly doing something wrong because we think we’d rather face a little bit of godly punishment than deal with disciplined growth.

This can look like refusing to confess a sin. Making media choices we know are wrong because the rest of the world watches it, so it can’t be that bad. Knowingly committing a sin but thinking it’s justified because of all the good we do.

We will commit sin. We will commit sin when we know better.

But when we decide that we would rather sin and deal with the consequences than try to change our desires, we’re trying to do risk assessment with our souls.

And we miss out on true godly sorrow, growth, and progressive change.

Happy Studying!

I was a good kid, and I told him honestly that I read my scriptures and prayed every day, was obedient to my parents, kind to my siblings, went to all my church meetings…

He told me how awesome all of that was.

And then he asked me, “So what are you working on improving right now for how you live the gospel?”

I literally froze. I was doing everything right, right?!

So I responded, “Uh, I don’t know.”

I remember he smiled so kindly at me and said, “Well maybe you can work on trying to answer that question next.”

This has always made me cringe/laugh in embarrassment now that I look back at it.

In my developing mind, checking all the gospel “boxes” meant that there wasn’t anything left for me to improve! And I can promise you I actually had plenty of things to improve.

I can’t even imagine feeling that way anymore – I’ve got a long list of things I need to work on and change, and I am VERY well aware of it!

I don’t think that are many of us who really feel “at ease” in Zion.

But we have to make sure the pendulum doesn’t swing too far the other way from “overly-confident teen” to “never-good-enough adult”.

Nephi isn’t saying, “Wo unto those who feel happy or comfortable in Zion at all!”

We are a part of Zion. Can we acknowledge what we are doing right? AND have our list of qualities we want to improve? Can both of these exist at the same time?

I think so. And I think it is a balancing act that takes a lot of work to get just right.

We can go to a temple recommend interview and respond with confidence. AND we can fully recognize the things we still need to improve.

We can belong in Zion and be happy, but always look for ways to be a little bit better.

Happy Studying!

I had a kid ask me the other day why I couldn’t give my infant son water out of my water bottle.

I explained that a baby’s tummy is so small that you should only fill it with milk that gives him all the nutrients he needs.

If you gave him water, he would think he was full, but he would starve because he wouldn’t have the nutrients he needs.

I told her that even though it may seem counter-intuitive, he gets all the “hydration” he needs from the milk he drinks!

So this scripture in 2 Nephi jumped out to me when I read it.

What are the things that I am doing with my time and energy that I THINK are giving me nourishment, but are really just taking up space that the important things need?

Social media. Watching shows. Checking email (again). Lots of outside commitments. A to-do list filled with things that aren’t necessary. Perfectionism. Busy work for a calling instead of focusing on the most important parts. Keeping up appearances.

And many more depending on different stages of life.

Sometimes, we trick ourselves into thinking that we are busy with important things.

But in reality, we are fooling ourselves, and we end up depleted of spiritual nourishment.

And sometimes, it can confuse us for a bit! “Wait a second, I spent a lot of time planning a great lesson for Sunday. I’ve been keeping up with lots of good friends on Facebook. I’m making sure my house is clean before I go to bed. My kids are involved in lots of good activities. Why am I missing my connection with God? Why do I feel spiritually starving?”

None of these things are bad on their own.

Water is good! It’s a component of breast milk or formula!

But when we stuff ourselves full of these things, we miss out on the things that truly NOURISH our soul.

We’ve got limited time. Let’s make true nourishment our priority.

Happy Studying!
