Teaching Kids - a course on Teaching Engaging Church Lessons

Do you feel overwhelmed or under-qualified teaching kids at church?

Being called as a teacher can be one of the most intimidating calls to receive. You are being asked to stand in front of a room of energetic kids with short attention spans, lots of questions, and wiggles. Maybe you worry your lesson will come across as “boring” when all you really want is to help them feel the spirit.

It's easy to wonder if they called the wrong person. How can you really make an impact with a group of wiggly kids?!

What if you could walk into your Primary class and:

  • Feel CONFIDENT leading a room full of energetic kids
  • Have STRATEGIES for handling wiggles, distractions, and unexpected comments
  • Ask questions with PURPOSE that invite kids to think and share
  • Know how to keep children ENGAGED no matter their age or attention span
  • Be EMPOWERED to lean on the Spirit while also using simple, effective teaching practices

Are you ready to feel excited to teach your kids each week, rather than nervous or overwhelmed?!

I am excited to share with you a course that is completely focused on helping latter-day saint teachers who teach children feel more empowered as you fulfill your calling:

WHY DID I CREATE THIS RESOURCE?

I come from a long line of educators– college professors, first grade teachers, seminary teachers, music teachers, missionaries. . . I grew up being surrounded by beautiful, empowering examples of teachers.

I attended Brigham Young University and received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and I loved discovering that “good teaching” can actually be accomplished through specific strategies, mindsets, and theories. I began teaching 6th grade and had so much fun implementing all the newest education research in real-time.

At the same time, I noticed that in the Church, I was surrounded by a huge range of teachers. Some were confident; others were embarrassed. Some were well-prepared; others were flying by the seat of their pants. As I’ve had children of my own, I’ve seen what a difference Primary teachers can make in the lives of children!

I sat there, seeing these well-meaning volunteers do their best to fulfill their callings, and wondering, “I wish I could just sit down with them and give them some advice, strategies, and outlines that would transform how they taught and make this easier on them!”

As the years passed and I received many opportunities to teach children at Church in a variety of settings, I finally made the connection:

While much of my formal education training as a teacher helped me become a better gospel teacher, I also learned that teaching at Church has some significant differences than teaching in a classroom.

I have tried it all. I’ve fine-tuned my strategies and then fine-tuned them again. I’ve dealt with every type of behavior or attitude issue imaginable. And I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve learned so that you can be more effective and confident to teach kids in realistic ways.

Here’s what people who have taken my "Teaching Kids" course have said:

"The tools, ideas, activities, simple things you offer here are so easy to apply in class at home and are things that will help even when you are dealing with different ages and different issues that can be adapted to fit in any classroom. You have provided the teachers the tools that will give them confidence to keep the teachers as involved as the kids."

"This course is AMAZING. It's something I'm going to continue to reference to help me as needed when I'm struggling with planning a lesson."

"I wanted to feel like I had some help with difficult behaviors, and ideas for keeping kids focused. I also wanted to just learn more ideas for teaching children specifically...I felt like the course addressed all of my questions. Cali is like a cheerleader coach - giving you knowledge, and then cheering you on. "

frequently asked questions:

What does "Teaching Kids" include?
  • 3 video modules: 1) Study, 2) Plan, and 3) Teach
    • Within each module, you’ll get multiple video-based lessons that each dive into a new teaching principle
  • A downloadable workbook filled with lesson ideas, tips for asking questions, canned responses for dealing with rogue comments, and so much more as you follow along with the videos (you’ll want to keep this workbook and refer to it over and over again!)
  • Lesson outlines and templates (NOT done-for-you lesson plans) that you can use to guide your plans as you prepare to teach
  • It is NOT done-for-you lesson plans for each week
  • It is NOT meant to replace the AMAZING principles taught in the Church’s “Teaching in the Savior’s Way” (which is so good, go study it right now!)
  • It is NOT going to tell you to focus on teaching strategies while ignoring the Spirit
  • It is NOT filled with idealistic recommendations from someone who has never actually taught children at Church

This course is for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who teach children in their callings. It is tailored specifically for Primary teachers and supporting them in how to effectively teach lessons to kids.

This course can also be useful for members of a Primary Presidency or Bishopric who often find themselves teaching children. This includes Primary presidencies, Bishoprics, and stake leaders.

In addition to being a top-rated podcaster, social media presence, speaker, and author, I am a certified teacher who received my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University.

I have taught members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints how to love the scriptures more and to feel confident learning, applying, and teaching from the scriptures for the past 6 years.

During that time, I created my own church-specific teaching method that is backed by both the latest education research and my knowledge of how the Spirit and priesthood power work to support those who willingly serve in church callings.
