None of us plan to end up far from the Lord.
It usually starts with something small.
A little resentment toward a ward member we choose not to let go.
A small lie to a family member that feels easier than telling the truth.
A TV show that isn’t the worst ever, but we keep making excuses to watch it.
Like the old frog-in-the-boiling-water analogy, we usually aren’t in danger of suddenly diving into very serious sin…
We just start becoming comfortable with tiny little changes until we no longer notice how far we’ve drifted.
King David didn’t go from faithful shepherd to serious sin overnight.
His choices snowballed.
One compromise led to another, and eventually the Lord asked him:
“Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight?” (2 Samuel 12:9)
Thomas R. Rowan taught:
“We tend to accept evil as long as it is not a shock that is thrust on us abruptly. We are inclined to accept something morally wrong if it is only a shade more wrong than something we are already accepting.”
The good news is that the opposite is true, too.
Small acts of righteousness snowball.
One single prayer.
A minute in our scriptures.
A day of sincere repentance.
One prompting we listen to.
So which way will we go today?
Will we slowly drift a little more into separation, apathy, or hard-heartedness?
Or will we take a small step closer to the Lord?
